Senator Sessions (R., Ala) and Schumer (D., NY) are working on new legislation to equalize treatment for cocaine offenders. The majority of the powdered cocaine offenders are Hispanic so there are politics galore here. Mandatory minimum sentencing is supposedly also under review by the Bush administration as many in Congress realize inequities and unusually severe punishments were created by the 1984 legislation (see Wall St. J., 8-9-01 for an excellent discussion of the problem).
