Readers familiar with the Tufted Titmouse know this almost tame, crested little songbird is common all year in our county. Its distinctive whistled song can often be heard in many backyards.
A clear whistled chant sounding similar to “peter, peter, peter”, or “here, here, here, here”. It even makes a chickadee-like call, a “tseep” that keeps the flock together. It’s “jay, jay, jay” call is harsh, alerting others to a disturbance, notes similar to those of chickadees, but more drawling, nasal, wheezy, and complaining.
Although it wears a crest like a cardinal it is more closely related to the chickadee. I find one trait in particular chickadees share with titmice to be fun to watch as they come to your bird feeder, both birds often carry away sunflower seeds one at a time to a nearby perch to eat. I have only seen them eat a seed at the feeder a few times and then only when perched atop the feeder.
