Tieckelmann’s argument for the defederization of existing drug laws seems to me a good first step. Many Congressmen and the DEA recognize that major mistakes were made in their Sentencing Reform Act of 1984. It will take courageous politicians to modify this law. G.W. Bush did, to his credit, go on record in his campaign that his administration will address the disparity in sentencing between crack and powdered cocaine users.
Both are cocaine but the crack is the “free base" whereas powdered cocaine is a cocaine salt, yet the legal penalties mandated by Congress dictate that 50 grams of crack define the possessor as a dealer whereas 500 grams (more than a pound) of powdered cocaine are
