attempted “Reconstruction” of Southerners is never ending. An endless slew of transplanted Yankees, touchy feely Southern liberals, scowling talking heads on cable television, and brain dead politicians have kept up the drum beat. They are going to fix us if it is the last thing they do. And they just don't understand why we don’t accept their enlightened viewpoint.
These days this “reconstruction” takes the form of a non-stop political media attack on the St. Andrews Cross Flag, the old rebel battle flag, which is an absolute thing of beauty. My friend Debra Settle wrote to the Rappahannock News Aug. 1 wondering why some of us fly this flag and asking “is there a less offensive way to symbolize your heritage?” Well, Debra, is there a less offensive way for you to express your prejudices than by your presumptuous letter.
