last of the hay this afternoon. The wagon went out the lane a few minutes ago and in its wake the drifting scents of dust and new-mown hay recall the day’s events. There were no fawns hiding in the long grass this year. The box turtles all managed to duck in time for the mower and the rake to pass. But judging from the crows in the field not all the insects and rodents were as lucky.

The fields always look their best when they’re new' mown, neat and contoured. Their pale green highlighted with flaxen wisps of unraked hay, they roll one into the other like linen billowing on a clothesline, pinned by hedgerows or the rich dark canopy of the wood lot.
