If butterflies make your heart flutter, you might enjoy taking part irr.the sixth annual Shenandoah National Park-Luray Area Butterfly Count on Sunday, July 7. The rain date is July 14. • .Volunteers will spend the day identifying and counting butterflies vyithin a 15-mile circle centered on Hershberger Hill, between Stanley and Luray in Page County. The circle extends from the Shenandoah River on the west to the headwaters of the Rapidan fliver on the east. The area was selected for its varied habitats, including woodland, farm fields, stream banks, hollows, and gravel roads, and its elevation range of 3,000 feet. * ’: Last year, participants counted 3,145 butterflies of 56 species. Count results for total number of butterflies and species have been among the highest in the region. '-"The count is sponsored by the park, the Shenandoah National Park Association, and the North American Butterfly Association (NABA).
