Diane, Bruce expressed her support for the proposed change and for the Middleton Inn, and engaged in a lengthy discourse on the benefits to the Town of the Zoning Ordinance change and read passages from the Comprehensive Plan that she contended supported her position.
Commission vote
Planning Commissioners Barbara Stockton and Jeff Benson expressed opposition to the proposed change during and after the public hearing.
Ms. Stockton said that she thought it the duty of members of the Town Council and the Planning Commission to “look into the future.” She said that she failed “to see the rationale for the change in the Zoning Ordinance for one person,” and pointed out that Ms. Kuhn “was aware of what she was dealing with when she applied for a B & B.”
Mr. Benson said that it was necessary to strike a balance between the commercial and residential uses in the Town, and noted that too much commercialization—such as that resulting from the proposed change— will result in a loss of residents.
Ms. Stockton moved “to not change the existing ordinance.” Her motion was seconded by Mitzie Young, and Commissioners Stockton, Young, Benson, and King vote aye and Planning Commission Chair Jean Goodine voted nay. The vote means that a negative recommendation for the Zoning Ordinance change will be presented to the Town Council. The Council will hear the application and make a final decision at their meeting of Nov. 13.
