Now 86, he lives alone at The Georgetown, an elegant retirement residence in the heart of Georgetown, when he is not down here at his farm.
Amidst his special mementos and a number of country folk art antiques from Rappahannock County, Sen. McCarthy graciously welcomes visitors and fellow residents alike into his circle of friends and admirers.
“Richard, this is Gene McCarthy,” he announced modestly when I answered my phone early one recent morning. “I got your good note arid wanted to respond promptly. It made me homesick for Rappahannock County. Yes, I’d be delighted to meet with you. What about this afternoon at three?”
