Death Demystified
In an effort to demystify death, the National Institute on Aging once undertook a study that revealed that most people died peacefully and painlessly. More than half of those studied died in their sleep, without pain, with family and friends nearby. This led the leader of the study to say that "not all older persons should necessarily expect to experience a slow, painful, or lingering period of dying accompanied by disabilities." And, while people's physical abilities diminished as death neared, their mental functions often remained high. More than half of the dying persons recognized their relatives on the last day of their lives. With these facts in mind, death can be regarded more as a peaceful experience.
