Asparagus likes welldrained, not low-lying, wet soil, even though it needs sufficient moisture, and it loves sandy, ocean-side habitats in particular. A little spritz, twice a season of a tablespoon of sea salt diluted in a quart of water, is a good foliar spray to keep your plants happy.
Manuring in the fall is a very good idea. Asparagus likes nutrient rich soil. Horse, goat, rabbit or cow manure is fine as is compost. Let the foliage stand until hit by frost, then cut back and add the vegetation to your compost pile.
Eating the spears is our common goal, no matter what path you take with their culture. My favorite recipe, other than steamed and glossed with real, fresh farm butter? Roast the spears in the oven with a drizzle of olive oil, sea salt, chopped garlic and lemon juice, or sesame seeds and tamari for an Asian flavor, or with shavings of a good hard goat cheese, which will melt and get crispy. Manchego ( a raw, aged sheep’s milk cheese) or fresh Parmesan are also good choices.
