A case in point is “how to employ ex-presidents so they don’t have to work for Disneyland or make speeches to religious organizations in foreign countries for honorariums.”
This led to a discussion of one unusual pet project of President Richard Nixon’s, and other presidents as well: how to control or eradicate pigeons and starlings from public buildings.
Sen. McCarthy noted that during Nixon’s first inaugural parade, pigeons flew by and left unwanted calling cards on marchers and viewers alike.
So for Nixon’s second inaugural, the General Services Administration came up with the idea to put some residue on the branches of trees and edges of buildings to keep the birds away.
Unfortunately, the birds liked the taste of whatever they put out but it also made them sick.
So instead of staying away, pigeons and other birds got sick and fell out of the sky onto the second inaugural parade.
