you who have lived in Rappahannock much longer than I know of other places here that have lost the natural landmarks that gave them their names.
Even in Rappahannock, single trees, and even whole stands of trees, have been removed to protect buildings or to create even more “open space,” a term that confuses me. For many people, open space seems to mean those areas where trees have been cut down, often just for the “view.”
This seems odd to me, since we live in the remains of what was called the “Great Forest” by Europeans when they first landed on the East Coast.
Mourning the loss of trees is not strictly a modern phenomenon.
Irish singer Loreena Mckennitt, on her album The Vist.. recorded a traditional Irish folk song that lamented the loss of the Great Oak of Portmore, which stood on the property of Portmore Castle on the shore of Lough Beg hundreds of years ago.
