We are privileged this week to share with our readers an article and photos about former Senator Eugene J. McCarthy, a man that Rappahannock County is proud to call one of its own. Senator McCarthy’s accomplishments outside of our county are great, and well known. The fact that many years ago he chose Rappahannock County for his haven has been a mutually rewarding experience for all of us. Not content just to use Rappahannock as a place to “get away from it all,” Senator McCarthy has embraced life here as few others have done. His writings celebrating Rappahannock show a special sensitivity to the mountains and our people, providing both information and insights to his readers. In between his comings-and-goings over the years, Senator McCarthy has made many friends here. Many of those who came of age during the Vietnam War especially admire him for what he stood for, and wonder what might have been, had he been elected President. For those and others around the nation, Senator McCarthy remains an icon. For us in Rappahannock, he’s our friend and neighbor too.
