It is a Bronze Star Medal of Valor awarded to an American soldier serving in Vietnam who became disenchanted with the war as it progressed.
The young man gave the medal to Sen. McCarthy with a letter, both of which are framed in a velvet-covered box on the wall.
Written by hand on a Vietnamese rice card in vibrant colors, with scratch outs and imperfect grammar, the letter said:
“Dear Sir, I am returning this Medal of Valor that I was awarded as an American soldier here in Vietnam because I. cannot in good conscience keep it. I have witnessed terrible things here as a soldier — of our soldiers killing maiming, hurting men, women and children who were not combatants in this war.
