masters of other more figurative approaches to the visual arts, Gerhard has gradually moved away from landscape and still life painting to abstract images of the imagination, and to a bolder palette.
He also dabbles in sculpting. Egged on mainly by younger family members and friends, he chops wood blocks into strange birds and beasts. Lately, he has been inspired to create with rusty metal pieces of discarded and found objects, forming configurations that catch his fancy. Some of these sculptures will be included in his exhibit.
His paintings have been shown by the Franz Bader Gallery in Washington D.C. since 1979, and by other galleries, including lately the Glassworks Gallery in Sperryville and the Mill in Millwood, Va. His works are held in private collections in the U.S. and Europe.
