On a Western Union Telegram dated Dec. 17 100 years ago, Orville Wright wrote: “Success four flights thursday morning all against twenty one mile wind started from Level with engine power alone average speed through air thirty one miles longest 57 seconds inform Press home Christmas.” Thirty-four years later he wrote to Henry Ford: “I was much pleased, on my return from the East, to find your telegram of congratulations on the thrity-ninth anniversary of our first flight. I thank you for it. ‘Wilbur and I thought the plane would hasten world peace. So far it seems to have done the reverse. “I suspect when you introduced mass production — one of the great inventions of the age — you little thought it would be used thirty-five years later in building tanks for world destruction.
