James R. Butler
Born in Woodvilie
James Robert Butler, 88, of Gordonsville died on March 9 at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
He was bora Nov. 15, 1914 in Woodvilie to the late John Henry Butler and Minnie Howard Butler.
Mr. Butler led a distinguished career as an Extension Agent of Albemarle County, the first black chief of an extension service 'office in Virginia. He also was the first black to be elected, to the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nellie M. Butler.
Additional survivors include a brother, Lewis S. Butler Sr. of Washington, a sister Irene E. Butler of Washington D.C., and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on March 14 at St. John Baptist Church in Cobham, Va. Interment followed at Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery in Woodvilie.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the James and Nellie Butler Scholarship Fund, 8121 Gordonsville Road, Gordonsville, Va., or to a service organization of your choice.
