Maybe the best part of spring this year for me will •be the opportunity to see a batch of new foals arrive on the farm. The owner has five brood mares, and they’re all preggers and due to drop their foals this spring.
The first is due in April, and I’m hoping to be available to witness its arrival. Newborn foals are like drunks trying to walk on stilts, but a whole lot cuter. I’ve seen a lot of new foals, but never witnessed their coming into the world.
Calves are pretty cute, too, but in Montana, where I helped deliver a few, they always arrived when it was well below zero, with several feet of snow on the ground. If I remember correctly, they also always arrived at about 3 a m., which made for a lovely experience all around.
So, join me in saying, “Winter be gone! We shall have baby animals, spring flowers and warm sunshine!” (Shhh. . . not too loud!
