The law profession wasn’t much more welcoming in the mid-1960s. Hope tells of staging a virtual sit-in at the office of famous Washington lawyer Edward Bennett Williams, seeking a job interview.

Refusing to be brushed off by an assistant, she confronted Williams as he was going to lunch, and reminded him he was the champion defender of unpopular causes.

“What’s more unpopular these days than hiring a woman lawyer?" she demanded.

Williams invited her to lunch and thus began her career as a trial lawyer.
