In little more than nine months, Bethel’s Ken Hyde will give birth to a decadeold vision to replicate the first powered airplane flight on its exact centennial.
“It’s a dream come true for me,” he said.
Drawing one step closer to the Dec. 17 flight date, officials and sponsors of tne project unveiled the uniquely authentic reproduction of the 1903 Wright Flyer in Hangar 7 at the Reagan National Airport yesterday.
Amanda Wright Lane, the great-grandniece of the famous inventors, told the nearly 125 spectators and news media at the event that the reenactment of the famous flight at 10:35 a.m. on the sands of Kitty Hawk, N.C. would be like magic.
“When I look at this beautiful muslin moth of an airplane I am reminded that it is the work of a kindred spirit,” she said.
But before the winter liftoff takes place, the aircraft returns to Warrenton for final preparations and more testing.
Next month the replica airplane embarks on a nationwide tour to half a dozen states before arriving in North Carolina in October for several weeks of preliminary field and flight testing.
