Early this morning, I returned to the spot where we buried Simba under the broad eaves of my new study and in front of the palladium window by my desk. I can now look out over the fields and mountains where Simba used to range on his daily explorations. I will always remember the incredible joy and laughter that that little creature gave us over the last seven years when Simba adopted us as a six-month old kitten.
The bright sun of a new day shone on the freshly turned site and the two pink roses that we so lovingly placed on Simba’s grave last night were as beautiful as when we said our prayers and told Simba goodbye.
We don’t know what took Simba from us. But I wish that Simba had had — as I did four years ago —an identical twin brother to save his life.
Simba was well known to many in the community. He appeared on several occasions in the Rappahannock News most recently on Feb. 20 as he was surveying the Blizzard of ‘93” from the deck of his winter wonderland.
