trade in a three-year apprenticeship in Zurich, followed by two years of butcher work in Vevay, Switzerland.
After a stint as a corporal in the Swiss Army, he answered a want-ad for a butcher in a small town in Nebraska. He arrived in the United States on September 28, 1950, able to speak only French and Swiss-German, and owing $200 to his sponsors in Burwell, Neb.
A year’s work as a smalltown butcher convinced him there was a better future elsewhere. After studying at Kearney State College in Nebraska, he set his sights on medicine, and managed to win acceptance at George Washington University’s medical school in Washington, D.C.
He was aided by a recommendation from a New York biochemist,whose daughter he had met on his ship voyage to the U.S. He married that woman, Marian Block, and began a family and a medical practice in Washington and later suburban McLean. Rappahannock home
