Our history
The final report of the survey of historic houses and other structures in Rappahannock County will be presented this Sunday at 2 p.m. at The Theatre on Gay Street in the Town of Washington. It has been a long time coming. More than 20 years ago, the county's Comprehensive Plan first recommended such a survey. Why is this survey so important? Pride in our history is one reason. If the recommendations in the report are implemented, Rappahannock County will have more rural historic, districts, and more historic properties per capita, than any county in the state. And if we want to restore historic properties, both the Commonwealth of Virginia and the IRS offer significant tax credits to homeowners. But there are other reasons. The Comprehensive Plan says that our economy is built on agriculture and tourism. Traditional agriculture is in decline, except for niche markets such as organically grown meats and produce. That leaves tourism. History attracts tourists, a mainstay of our economy. Historic Sperryville is favored by tourists, the Town of Washington has been a tourist attraction for decades ai}d the Civil War history throughout the county attracts visitors too. Just as our open spaces, our mountains and our rivers and streams are part of our landscape, so too is our history. We see it every day in our homes and villages. We need to preserve that legacy as well. We urge everyone to go to the Theatre Sunday and learn more about something else that makes Rappahannock special.
