Sharon Pierce remembers his “very caring” attention to Newt Jackson, a black man with a bad heart, for whom Dr. Krebser arranged heart surgery at the University of Virginia.
Henry Gorfein, another friend, recalls that “my father in his 80s came to live with us, and he wouldn’t let any other doctor touch him. Dr. Krebser had these gentle hands. I still remember that — how gentle he was with my father.”
The ‘Lunch Bunch’
Over a period of a quartercentury or so, Dr. Krebser presided at meetings of his famous “Lunch Bunch,” which began with friend Doug Hume at the Flint Hill grocery store and evolved into a semi-permanent, floating debating society that met at a succession of Rappahannock eateries, most recently the Public House in Flint Hill.
Discussions, which centered on “politics, religion and sex,” according to participant Butch Zindel, were lively and opinionated.
There were ultra-conservatives and liberals, and Dr. Krebser, a staunch Democrat, was among the latter.
