“In a time when conviction and commitment are too frequently coats to put on or take off as expedience requires, his were woven into the fabric of his thought, word and deed. He will be missed,” said McCarthy.

Judge Rayner Snead, who knew Dr. Krebser as a doctor and member of the “Lunch Bunch” said, “The citizens of this county owe him a debt of gratitude not only for his care and love for its people but for his desire and efforts to preserve the county’s beauty and environment.” ,

Final battle

He faced his last adversary — cancer of the prostate that grew deadly — with acceptance and characteristic toughness. He was not a religious man, but as friend Alan Zuschlag sees it, “I think he had a religious attitude toward life. He lived life to the fullest.

“When I visited him during his illness, I asked him if he had any regrets. He really didn’t. He had led a good life and had his affairs in order, and knew it was his time.”

For a man who started with so little, he finished life with so much — respect, accomplishments, many friends, a loving wife named Fran at his bedside and a beautiful view out his picture window at the place he came to love best, Rappahannock County.

“He had quite a life,” Henry Gorfein said. “He lived the American dream.”
