Art students from kindergarten through 12th grade at Wakefield Country Day School recently had their art work exhibited at the school’s annual end-of-the-year art show last month.
In grades K-7, the work showcased the students’ accomplishments using the Monart Method Drawing Program. The school began using this method this year, thanks to Barbara Sherwood, a WCDS parent, artist and long-time advocate of the method. Her support and perserverence helped generate funds for the program.
The Monart Method was created in 1979 by Mona Brookes, an art teacher from California. It teaches' students to see the world in terms of five basic elements of shape, and how to put that information on a piece of paper.
The goal of Monart is to create a noncompetitive, nonjudgmental environment where all students can achieve success, develop self confidence and experience the joy of artistic expression through realistic drawing.
