Don Petersen, 40, a computer analyst from Front Royal, once went to a Potomac Appalachian Club meeting with his girlfriend to see an exhibition of mountain rescue techniques.
She told him she thought he was be the kind of man interested in daring mountain rescues. So he joined the SMRG. He’s been a member for two years and loves it, but, alas, the girlfriend is gone.
Petersen has to stay ready to go, bags packed, at a moment’s notice. He lays out his pack for a visitor: a helmet, a helmet light, blankets, first aid equipment, ropes and pulleys, dry clothes, water, energy bars for emergency food, compass and pocket knife.
They have flares for signaling, and additional lights and matches.
On a moment’s notice they can be called upon enter a forest, perhaps at night, perhaps in a blizzard, to find a human being.
