Orienteering in its simplest form is finding your way in the woods with a compass and a map, but for professionals it is also a “timed cross country competition.”
Gretchen Hurley, 27, of Falls Church, had just come in from a competition — finding four points on a map, writing down the code numbers and getting through the forest in the rain to base in an hour-and-a-half.
Hurley has been in SMRG for two years and is working to earn her “Field Tbam Member” rank, and is studying for an Emergency Medical Technician’s rating.
But she is already “CQ” callout qualified, and has been on missions.
A girlfriend got her involved after describing the rescue of people from a downed plane. Unlike Petersen, Hurley found her fiance among her colleagues.
In one of her recent searches, she said, they were trying to find a 44-year-old woman who was reported to be despondent. But they didn’t get to her in time, and she took her life.
“It spurs you to do better the next time,” she said.
