Boxwood Hill in Castle ton was recently added to the Virginia Landmarks Register.
Formerly known as the George L. Carder House, Boxwood Hill is located at 456 Scrabble Road, about two miles off of Route 522. It is owned by Peter H. Brink and Susan G. Brink of Washington, D.C.
The two-story, gable-roofed brick house was built by George L. Carder in 1833, the year that Rappahannock County was chartered.
According to the registration form filed with the National Register of Historic Places, the main house at Boxwood Hill was “Built for a prosperous but middling Rappahannock County farming family.”
It goes on to describe the house as “Plain in form, its original details are molded and composed in the Federal style. One notable component of its design is an original kitchen built into the cellar.”
