Miss Joan Getsinger, president of the Rappahannock County Garden Club, said the club had done something similar in 1988, but since then, the “Maintenance of it has kind of held us back.”
She and others, including Katherine Bull, who handles the Episcopal Church’s garden, said the plantings should be native to Virginia and chosen to be hardy in this climate. But they warned that maintenance should be done by a paid contractor.
Several club members said that volunteer help cannot be kept up in hot summers and cold winters.
Candace Clough, an estate gardener, urged that a study be made of the traffic of people around the courthouse before a final plan is laid out.
If funds permitted, she said there should be an automatic, electronic sprinkler system included in the plans.
Fund raising suggestions ran the gamut from jumble sales to a music festival.
When to formally kick off the campaign was discussed, but most of the audience agreed that July 4 was too soon for the group to arrange an announcing event.
Cheri Woodard, of the Friends of the Library, said a similar committee should be formed to accept contributions that could be deducted from the donor’s taxes.
The tea was arranged by the Garden Club, and included sandwiches and cookies.
