Trainer Doug Fout says New Zealand import Suembul “doesn’t really like timber racing.” The bay gelding’s performance Saturday loudly said otherwise.
EMO Stables’ runner showed a clear penchant for solid obstacles at the Old Dominion Hounds Point-toPoint, speeding to the easiest of victories in the featured Leeds Don open timber at the April 3 meet.
It Weis a nice rebound for the erratic runner — Suembul nearly veered off course, bolting to the outer rail in his last timber start March 27 in Camden, S.C. Fout said he wasn’t sure if it was giving Suembul two weeks between races to think about it, or a change of jockey, but the horse zipped around the Ben Venue Farm course like a pro, winning by eight lengths from a talented field that included the race’s defending champ.
Jockey Mark Griffiths held the 10-year-old up off the speeding lead of last year’s winner Bowman’s Crossing for the first of three miles, allowing the gelding to jump to the front with two miles to go. “He jumped like he owned the place,” said the 28-year-old English native.
