Listing on the Virginia register places absolutely no restrictions on the owner’s use of the property. Registration is an educational act, designed to identify historic resources and encourage — but not require — their preservation.
Numerous benefits
Although a Virginia register listing does not prevent an owner from demolishing, selling, or altering a property, it does provide benefits such as technical assistance from the Department of Historic Resources and statewide recognition.
The owner of a Virginia landmark may be eligible for state and federal rehabilitation tax credit programs, and may elect to donate a preservation easement on a historic property.
