Last week, we quoted a portion of a dispatch sent to Secretary of War for the Confederacy from Genera] Robert E. Lee.

This dispatch describes the events of Nov. 10, 1862, and speaks of General Stuart’s engagement near Amissville that day. At the time of this engagement, General Stuart was traveling with staff member and good friend, Major Van Borke. Van Borke came from Germany to help with the Confederate cause.

After the war, Von Borke wrote a book entitled, “Memoirs of the Confederate War for Independence.”

He wrote that arriving on the field, Stuart recklessly
