ble with bird feeders and pet food is not just a summer thing. Bears sometimes awake from winter hibernation and roam for a snack or two. We once had one show up a few hours before a predicted big winter snow storm, plop down under a black walnut tree in the unclipped meadow out back, and take a two-hour nap before wandering off up the mountain. I guess the bear hadn’t heard the weather report.

But like I said, we love our bears, and Joy Lorien recently reminded me of this with her own little ditty about bears:
Round and round in Nature I go,
On mountains high and valleys low,
And above all things I love to see,
Are those black bears a’running free.
Yes, me too, Joy. I especially like meeting up with them nose-to-nose in the middle of the raspberry thicket; me with my raspberry bucket threequarters full and him with raspberry goo all over his snout. At least his breath is improved when the raspberries are in.
A bounty of bears
It really is spectacular though the way the bear population has recovered in the Virginia Blue Ridge and the piedmont, with the return of eastern forests and the regulation of hunting. Bears need large tracts of relatively undisturbed land. As omnivores they eat most anything:
