“We didn't know if anyone would come,” Sellers recalled. That same year in 1965, Hurricane Elena swept up the coast threatening to wipe out the crop.
“It almost hit, but missed and went up and on to Michigan. Then, at six in the morning, we got up and saw a whole line of cars stretching back it seemed like a mile. They picked seventeen tons in the driving rain. I never saw anything like this, and figured the economics... it’s a classic example of 'inelastic demand',” said Sellers.
Inspired by this clamorous instance of urban interest in going to the country and picking cherries, Sellers threw himself wholeheartedly into the affair.
“I took a year off and lived at that other orchard, lived with the men, got up at 6 every day and planted cherries all year.”
