The AASBD describes their goals as being to encourage adult-youth activities, through the building and racing of the cars. Building the cars, they hope, will help kids learn to set and complete goals, develop good character, self-confidence, perseverance, sportsmanship, and the importance of craftsmanship. The thrill of competition and having a lot of fun with kids and adults on a fine summer day may also play a role in the appeal of the Derby.
Derby teams can also compete in rallies around the nation, and the two winning racers from each Derby race locale are selected to compete in the annual All American Soap Box Derby in Akron Ohio.
On Derby Day in Culpeper, drivers also vote among themselves, choosing one of their number as showing the best sportsmanship.
