up on the mountain the other evening and heard all this squalling up ahead. Sounded like a crow. Then as I moved fcrward I got a glimpse of him just 40 feet ahead. Sure enough; a big old crow standing on the side of a tree trunk about six feet up, just like a pileated woodpecker, but doing that crow squawking. Wait a minute; I’ve never seen a crow stand on the side of a tree trunk before! Yep...it was the smallest little baby bear you can imagine, crying for momma. Well, cute as he was, I got out of there!

Mom obviously put him in the tree and went off looking for a meal. I'Ve been in this situation more than once before; enough to know that if mom is still within earshot (and she has big ears) she’ll be back pronto and not happy about someone messin’ with her cub! I was worn out from trail building and not finding any merkles anyway.

Well, in a few short weeks it will be raspberry pickin’ season, so I better find my pail. I’ve noticed tunnels forming again through the berry thickets. When the tunnels are big enough for me to get through without getting down on all fours, I known the bears have already been well fed and are getting big. They seem to scope out the berry patches well before the berries are set and ripe. My only decision now is whether to wear camouflage
