Lillian r ox, a member ol the Willis Chapel congregation, said they were losing a multi-talented minister, and atrue scholar of the bible. She said that Merlin was always there for any member of the community who needed him and was generous with his time, his presence and his prayers. She said Rev. Shorb was “one in a million.”
Barbara Jamieson, organist for both the Flint Hill and Sperryville churches, praised Rev. Shorb for his gentle spirit and nature, and his dedication to God’s word. She noted that his passion for the Lord is an inner passion, and part of his gentleness. Music, she said, is part of his spirit; it is who he is.
Mabel Lillard has been a member of the Flint Hill Methodist Church for 78 years. She said no other minister had ever stayed more than five years. She welcomed having church eveiy Sunday, and communion every month, which was not always the case before Rev. Shorb arrived. She said Merlin has helped the church to grow, and was quick to point out that he “preaches from the bible.” She said, as did others, that she has never heard him say a negative word
