Over the years, the graves were dug, the names and dates etched’or carved in the stones, the morose processions guided through the gates, the Deity’s protection called upon, the dirt plopped onto the long boxes, the flowers arranged. Over the second half of the 20th century the records of who was buried and on what plot, were gathered - it is said — by Mr. Gibson Whorton, an earnest and dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge.
The confusion begins where Mr. Whorton’s lease on life expired. He passed away in 1995 and the records of the burials and plot ownership went wi#h him. Exactly how is a story that has different versions. One is that a close relative simply gathered the books and the purchase receipts, the ledgers and all the other papers and made a bright bonfire. Any motive for the destruction or simple disappearance is as much a mystery as who might be under what part of the lawn over there on the hill.
