Plot puzzle
The puzzle posed by the Masonic burial ground is one part of a picture of the care of the dead across the county. The Historical Society counts 10,852 burials in Rappahannock County, in church grounds, in family plots, even in people’s back yards.
Folks at the Society wonder if that count makes up perhaps half of all the dead in the county. At the Society you can hear stories of people showing up, some of them in tears, frustrated at not being able to find a longdeparted relative. Other accounts tell of churches in the county with dwindling congregations of old people, leaving the question: who will mind the graves when everybody is in one?
