In fifty years, a great deal can change.
This year, fifty years have passed since 1956, the year of the formation of the Castleton Community Volunteer Fire Company. Castleton is a small, out of the way place even by Rappahannock standards, and the history of its volunteer fire department is a window into Castleton’s own story.
“There just wasn’t much up there but the fire department, and it was the thing to do at the time,” recalled John Henry Woodward, a former chief of the CCVFC and former Rappahannock County Sheriff. Woodward was an active member of the CCVFC since the early sixties, and only recently hung up his fire ax.
