in the RCPS
The RCPS has made great strides in technology since 1982 when, according to Superintendent Bob Chappell, the schools had four TRS-80 computers- all in one classroom at RCHS. In 2006, there are over 600 computers on the RCPS network with broadband Internet filtered connectivity. Included in that number are nine mobile laptop carts that teachers can bring into classrooms to serve up to 24 students. Students learn to use Microsoft Office software to prepare research papers and PowerPoint presentations. They also use them for research.
Thanks to a grant from Headwaters, RCES 3rd Grade Teachers purchased Palm Pilots for students to use with class assignments including vocabulary lessons. Using wireless technology the students learned to “beam” information from their Palms to other students or to the teacher. The 2006-07 budget contains funding for additional Palms.
During 2005-06 RCHS students in the Geospatial Technologies class used GIS/GPS equipment to map area farms, area Civil War Trails, Scrabble School Foundation information, and helped design an online system of tax maps and property information for Rappahannock County employees to use in their work.
There are several “Smart Boards on Wheels” at both schools that teachers may use to display computer-generated interactive information. “Treecarts” of computers connected to projectors are becoming a popular method for Teachers and students to display PowerPoint presentations.
