when the team arrived, still in need of windows, doors and paint. When the building was completed on Friday the team led the first service including singing and praise dancing by three youth of the team. Rev. Jon Heddleston delivered the sermon of dedication.
The team also led services in three other church buildings throughout their week in Belize City and in a small village close by.
Karie Clark, one of the team members, described her feelings about the trip.”I loved feeling dirty, salty, sweaty, hot, well fed, painted on, packed into a van, sore and bruised and slathered with bug spray and suntan lotion. I loved the sunrises, the rain, God’s people in Belize, God’s purpose for our trip and those I worked with.”
Karie went on to say, “The people of Belize don’t have much: limited tools, commodities, clean water, dry clothes, creature comforts. They do have lots of fruit. I even had bananas in my Caribbean potato soup! The fresh pineapple was my favorite; coconut my most exotic. There is something to be said for gathering your bounty from the nearest tree and hacking into it with a machete.” Mission accomplished
As the church held their first church service Karie summarized, “We proudly donned three coats of interior paint; welded, sanded, primed and painted ten window grates, put up twentytwo new aluminum window shutters and screens; and hung, sanded, stained, and sealed three solid wood doors. The church floor was swept free of inches of dirt, the five or so feet of surrounding property was groomed and the trash was contained.”
