After repeated attempts, I got the reporting company on the line and informed them of their error. Oh, no sir, they said, that wasn’t an error. They checked with the lending institution and that information was correct. There was a bad loan against me. No amount of explaining was helpful. They had done their investigation, and that was the end of that.
Now, if it really was incorrect, they said, I could contact the lending company in California and attempt to clear it up, and then I could have the lending company contact them to take it off my credit report. I pointed out that they were continuing to report false information on me, alter they had been informed that it was false, and they were destroying my credit worthiness. They should be liable for something. Sony, sir, nothing we can do.
I will leave you to ponder the fix that I find myself in, but I wanted you to know this identity theft business is real. Please be careful. I will give you a further update in a week or two. In the meantime, don’t give out your personal information to anyone on the phone.

Here’s what happened last week. Linda called an eye doctor for an appointment. The lady taking the information asked my wife for her social security number. I was standing nearby when Linda said to them, “You want my social security number?”
