requirement for

rising 6th Grade

students

The 2006 Virginia General Assembly passed a law which requires all 6th grade students to have a tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) booster shot prior to entry into school this fall, if at least five years have passed since the last shot. If your child has received a Tetanus shot, Tdap, Dtap, or Td within the last 5 years then they do not need this shot. However, RCES School Nurse Linda Torrance says “We must have the date that the immunization was received. Please bring in a copy of the immunization record showing the date of the recent Dtap, Tetanus, Tdap or Td. Call the health department to set up a time that you can take your child to receive this immunization before the start of the new school year. Rappahannock County Health Dept, telephone is (540) 675-3516. Please direct questions to the health department.”

Ms. Torrance also asked that we let you know that the school nurses will be available on “Meet-the-Teacher-Day” Aug 24 from 2-5 and 6-8 at both schools to receive medications, have permission forms filled out, or to speak with parents about any health care needs of their child. This would also be a great time for 6th grade parents to bring the requested immunization information to Ms. Torrance at RCES, if they have not done so already.
