The Office of Consumer Affairs offers these suggestions:
• Do not carry extra credit cards, your social security card, or passport except when specifically needed.
• Call 1-888-50PTOUT (888-567-8688) to remove your name from the marketing fists of the three credit reporting bureaus which send preapproved offers of credit.
• Register with the Direct Marketing Association’s Mail Preference Service (www.dmaconsumers.org) or PO Box 643, Carmel, NY 10512), and E-mail Preference Service (www.e-mps. org) to remove your name, home address and e-mail address from many national fists.
• Add your phone number to the National Do Not Call Registry at www.donotcall.gov to reduce the number of telemarketing calls you receive at home.
• Consider switching to an unlisted telephone number.
