The church had burned down five years ago but the members were still meeting in the ground level of the pastor’s tiny home in Belize City, Belize.
It took 14 members of a mission team from Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church in Sperryville to help finish the new cement building so that the first service could be held in a new building. That building was about three times the size of the cramped quarters the devoted members had been occupying. Contributing a week’s worth of labor as well as the materials to install shutter windows, screens, doors and a lot of paint, the team was able to accomplish their goals.
Mission points
Plans for the trip had begun a year in advance as team leader, Alan Brown, of Flint Hill, began to study available Southern Baptist mission points. A Baptist resource book conveyed needs for help from around the world to those wishing to help out. The mission team discussed the needs of people and churches outside the United States and chose a small Spanish-speaking church in Belize. Formerly British Honduras, Belize is a small country south of Mexico.

The group left on June 24 and as Joy Heddleston, 16, noted,"Stepping out of the plane for the first time, I knew it was going to be a hot week. The humidity is so thick in Belize and the sun so intense that it takes some getting used to.”
But Joy also commented, “We were immediately greeted by the pastor’s family there. They were very kind to us.”
