Whether it was due to overspending on equipment, overpaying its employees, a decline in local sheep, a depressed wool market, or a precursor to the Great Depression, 1927 saw the demise of the Rappahannock Woolen Mill. It was never revived.
There is however what many might consider a noble epitaph for this once thriving local industry.The village of Laurel Mills retains the ambiance of the proud mill days. The store and many of the homes in the village date from the company town era. On the hillside overlooking “the Mills’, the Smith residence lives on in stately fashion as the Laurel Mills Farm Bed and Breakfast. May the look and feel of the community endure intact another 100 years. And that means, when visiting, you may bring Mary’s Little Lamb, but please leave your Buffalo at home!
