Garcia stars as nightclub owner Fico Fellove, whose El Tropico showcases the latest singers and costumed dancers. Much of the movie takes place in Fico’s El Tropico where the viewer has the pleasure of enjoying some rather excellent Cuban song and mambo music reminiscent of scenes from the real Tropicana club that existed in Cuba. The story is told with an admirable sense of respect and affection for Cuba and its people, culture and music.
Waldemar Kalinowski’s production design takes full advantage of the color, texture, and natural elements of the Caribbean including the crisp, clear light, the palm trees, the brilliant azure ocean with its breathtaking beaches, and the alternately romantic, violent nature of the moon.
