“If you go back five years, there are people who had houses worth $75,000 then that are worth $4 - $500,000 now. . . This is a big issue, and the county needs to be very responsible with the way people are taxed,” said Wayland. For Wayland, the proposed two cent Conservation Easement district that galvanized the county last spring was not an example of being responsible.
“I was against [the proposed Conservation Easement District]. I’m all for scenic easements, I think the county has done a good job with them. But I don’t think we should have all the citizens paying for them. That two cents in the tax rate can make a big difference to some of the citizens of Sperryville,” said Wayland.
